Our history

Where We Started

The Charlottesville Derby Dames were Charlottesville’s first and skater-run flat-track roller derby league.

The idea to form a derby team in Charlottesville began back in 2007 with two of our founding members, Jessika Daver and Phenol Barbie Doll. By October of that year, the Dames had recruited more local ladies, found an initial practice location, and started learning the basics of the game.

Things really kicked off in 2008 when three CDD members – Little Miss Pissed, MatilDa Molish, and Dark and Stormy – played in their first bout Commotion by the Ocean. In 2009, the Dames were ready to host their first home bout: Daylight Slayings, featuring Charlottesville Derby Dames v. Northside Stranglers at Expoland (now called the Augusta Expo Center).

During COVID-19, group practice and bouting had to stop and practice space became harder to find. But CDD kept working in the background, holding consistent practices again in 2023 and started playing public games again in 2024 at the Augusta Expo Center.

Where We Are Today

Today, our league continues to have both actively-bouting and developing skaters, refs, NSOs, and volunteers. In 2025, we rebranded to Charlottesville Roller Derby. Our team has away and home games as part of VRDN and WFTDA. The league holds weekly practices emphasizing strategy and game knowledge, as well as fundamental skills, agility, and endurance.

CRD is proud to be a member of the Charlottesville community and to give back to those who support us. We donate a portion of the proceeds of all our home bouts to local charities and regularly volunteer for community events and fundraisers. If you are a representative of a local group that would like to get involved with CRD, please get in touch with us to learn more.
